Surf-Rocker Donavon Frankenreiter at Western HS!

Friday the 13th doesn't always mean bad luck. For us at Western High School it was our lucky day! Musician and professional surfer Donavon Frankenreiter came to make a special gift to our Music Department.  He and his sponsors 100.3 The Sound, Billabong and Subaru donated a guitar and $5000 to support music education in our school.
We are truly grateful and appreciate the kind gift.  We will put it to good use to replace the electric guitar and bass that were stolen from the band room.  We plan to also use the funds to repair our broken keyboard and bass amps.  It is truly a gift that can keep on giving as our students learn music and share their talents with others!
At 9:00 AM on the morning of Friday, September 13th we had a ceremony with the presentation to the school.  Donavon and all sang "It Don't Matter" together accompanied by Mr. Wargo on piano and Jovanny Gonzalez on tuba. The choir performed a song from "Rent" and the band played our opener from this year's field show.  We got Donavon to sing his song "Free" for all of us, what a treat!  We took a group photo at the end, a real Sgt. Peppers moment.
Thank you to all the administrators from the County, our district and Western High School for being there and your continued support of music education in our schools.  Thank you to our principal Mr. Daniel Lunt for writing in to help steer them our direction!  Please enjoy the pictures below from the event.

Stanbury Uniforms has a full page color advertisement on the back cover of the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association Directory and we are featured prominently.  Our very own Steven Paz (class of 2013) is in uniform right in the center. This directory goes out to all the schools in the entire southern half of California.

We are pressing ever onward with the production of our show.  The Regiment is finished with football games and can now focus on competitions.  We have had one show thus far and the next one is coming up fast.  I see improvement not only in the show but especially in the quality of rehearsal.  The students are figuring it out that if you want your best performance you must first give your best rehearsal.  We don't have the number of staff members of the past due to our lack of funds.  Students have had to take a more active role in their learning process.  The end result is more ownership and pride in what they are producing.  It has taken longer to reach our goals but now that they are using the knowledge they have gathered they are making more dramatic results in cleaning the show.
I want to thank the leaders, the boosters, and the staff for your persistence, patience and participation.  Together we can all reach our goals.  No matter what the outcome we all had a good time getting their together.  Here's to the season ahead!

Off To A Great Start!

I have been so busy with Band Camp that I have not been able to keep up with my blogs.
Exciting things are happening this year with the Western High School Pioneer Regiment.
We have a strong representation of returning members and a large influx of new members.  Although this is not the largest total number of performers the Pioneer Regiment has had it is the largest number of new members!  One of the great things about this new class of students is they are well prepared to jump on board and contribute to the success of our season.  We have been working hard on marching basics, music fundamentals, team building, fundraising, learning drill sets for the show and generally having a great time in the process.
In addition to our camp we have had several fun activities that occurred all before school began.  We had a great time at the Family Picnic, the mid-camp BBQ and team competition was so much fun and the Pot Luck Performance drew rave reviews not only for the excellent performance but for the yummy food as well.
We capped off all of that with our yearly Beach Party at Bolsa Chica State Beach.  I have since learned that our kids were fish in a former life.  They swam and they swam.  There was lots of food thanks to pot luck leftovers and the tasty cooking of Mr. John Sanchez at the BBQ.  Thank you John for all the food and time you contributed!  My favorite part is always the roaring fire  and watching everyone roast marshmallows for s'mores.  The fire was a little too roaring due to enthusiastic fire builders and a strong sea wind.  I still smell that smoke!
I would like to continue encouraging parents and family members to get involved with our program.  Come to the performances, join us at the parties and help us earn funds to keep the program running.  As the saying goes "It takes a village!"  Please come be a part of our little part of town and please help our kids be at the front of "Life's Parade!"

Welcome to the brand new Western High School Instrumental Music Department website!  I am trying out a new site recommend to me by my good friend and colleague Paul Wargo.  I am very excited to be up and rolling.  I plan on updating the site regularly with loads of information designed for current and past students and parents.  There will be calendar info, class activities, awards updates, student profiles and lots more.  Remember it is summer vacation so the going may be slow to update, but remember I am new to this as well.  Please be patient and I promise we will make this a fun and informative place to find out all you wanted to know about our favorite music people!
